Popular French cryptocurrency security company and hardware wallet producer, Ledger, has announced in a blog post on the 28th of January that their new Ledger Live mobile app is now available. The app will be available for several of their products including the Ledger Nano S, Ledger Blue and their soon to be released Ledger Nano X.
The mobile app is in essence a mobile version of their desktop manager of the same name and compatible with iOS 9+ and Android Lollipop 5 and above. It does however have some limitations for those with the Ledger Nano S and Ledger Blue. It is at the moment primarily intended for use with the Ledger Nano X. Utilising bluetooth technology, through a secure pairing, the app can be used with the Ledger Nano X in much the same way as the desktop application manager without the need for an OTG cable. According to Ledger:
With the combination of the Ledger Live smartphone app and the Ledger Nano X, you will be able to manage your crypto assets. Not only that, but installing applications and updating your device’s firmware will be possible, everywhere you go.
There are at the moment limitations when using the app with Ledger Blue and Ledger Nano S hardware wallets and users can only run the app with these devices in “consultation mode”. This can be activated by scanning a LiveQR code on the desktop app. Consulation mode means that users can currently only view their account balance on the mobile app however Ledger assures us that a full version is “in the works”.
In the future, Ledger Nano S users (Android smartphones only) will be able to transact as well through the use of an OTG cable.
Neither the Ledger Nano S and Ledger Blue have bluetooth and they will require an OTG cable meaning that “due to technical limitations” the app will not be available for iOS users. That being said, the increased convenience that the new Ledger Live app provides is very welcome, providing a mix of security and mobility that has been often lacking in hardware wallets.
